Scientists discovered two seismic anomalies below Earth’s surface called Low-Shear-Velocity Provinces (LLSVPs)
One of them, located underneath Africa, is slowly creeping up towards the surface.
African LLSVP is greater in height and less stable than its Pacific counterpart because of its lower density.
Scientists discovered two anomalies using seismic observations. The first one on the lowermost mantle is located in Africa, between around 400 and 1,600 miles below Earth’s surface, while the second is under the Pacific Ocean.
The structure of the earth is divided into four major components: the crust, the mantle, the outer core, and the inner core.
These anomalies are structures called Low-Shear-Velocity Provinces (LLSVPs), which influence core and mantle processes. There is still much to learn about these structures. In fact, there are different discussions about what these structures represent. These are generally interpreted as dense thermochemical piles composed of recycled oceanic crust or iron-rich material.
Arizona State University researchers studied LLSVPs to understand the chemical composition and thermal structure in Earth’s mantle, with the findings published in Nature Geoscience.
Qian Yuan and Mingming discovered the two anomalies. Their investigation into these structures revealed that the African LLSVP is greater in height and less stable than its Pacific counterpart because of its lower density.
These structures are responsible for volcanic activities. Mantle plumes, thought to be volcanic centers known as hotspots, arise from LLSVP edges. One research publication linked this anomaly to volcanic activity in Africa between 155 and 95 million years ago. Li found a potential basis for this, speculating that the recent information about the anomalies could be related to intense volcanism.
“The Africa LLSVP may have been rising in recent geological time,” Li said in a statement. “This may explain the elevating surface topography and intense volcanism in eastern Africa.”
She explained that if these anomalies continue to rise, it is possible that more supervolcanoes and earthquakes could happen in Africa millions of years from now.
“The top of the African LLVP is at a depth of [around] 1,000 km. Therefore, it would take about 50-100 millions of years for it to reach the surface, assuming it raises with a velocity of 1-2 cm per year. In fact, as the African rises, it may become cold and dense. It is not impossible for it to sink again when it becomes dense enough,” Li said, explaining that the anomaly is rising at an estimated rate of 1 to 2 centimeters per year.
This piece of information could be important for the next scientists to understand the different processes deep inside the Earth.

“This work has far-reaching implications for scientists trying to understand the present-day status and the evolution of the deep mantle structure, and the nature of mantle convection.”
