WHAT’S BEING CLAIMED:
- Selena Gomez has been checked into a psychiatric facility to receive therapy after struggling with depression following last year’s kidney transplant.
- The singer was reportedly having health issues related to her transplant, which led to an ‘emotional breakdown.’
- According to sources, Gomez had always monitored her mental health and ‘knows her health and wellness require ongoing maintenance,’ which is why she has been receiving treatments ‘whenever she feels off.’
Selena Gomez is reported to have been checked into a psychiatric facility for mental health treatment after having struggled with depression after last year’s kidney transplant.
The first reports of her hospitalization were reported by TMZ, which stated that the singer had been hospitalized twice in the past few weeks. She was reported to have had health issues last week which led to an “emotional breakdown,” and is currently receiving dialectical behavior therapy at a psychiatric facility in the East Coast.
A source explained to ET that Gomez and her loved ones “have always kept an eye on how she feels, even more so since her kidney transplant.” They stated that “Selena wasn’t feeling well and went to the hospital, as she does whenever she feels off. After further monitoring, it was decided that Selena would seek treatment at a [mental health] facility.”
Two weeks ago, Gomez announced on Instagram that she was taking a break from social media and advised fans, “Kindness and encouragement only for a bit! Just remember- negative comments can hurt anybody’s feelings.”
It was only in September 2017, during her hectic schedule for New York’s fashion week, when Gomez talked about her kidney transplant over the summer. She explained that it was the reason she was “laying low for part of the summer.”
She stated that she was diagnosed with lupus and needed a new kidney, which was donated by her friend, actress Francia Raisa. Gomez thanked her “beautiful friend” for making the “ultimate gift and sacrifice” especially when she needed the transplant for her “overall health.”
Gomez had also admitted herself earlier this year to a wellness program in New York to treat anxiety and depression. The decision was reportedly “preventative” because “she knows her health and wellness require ongoing maintenance,” a source told ET.
