WHAT’S BEING CLAIMED:

  • One man and six siblings, who lived in the basement of a farmhouse away from the world for allegedly nine years, were discovered by Dutch police.
  • The oldest of the siblings escaped and sought help in the hope to end the way they lived.
  • Dutch police went to respond to reports from concerned neighbors and arrested the man for not cooperating with the investigation.

A Dutch family who allegedly lived for nine years in a secret basement in a farmhouse waiting for “the end of time,” were found by the police after one family member escaped and sought help, according to BBC News.

A 58-year-old man and 6 siblings aged 18-24 were discovered in the Drenthe province, in the northeastern part of Netherlands, reported the local news outlet RTV.

On Sunday evening, the oldest of the siblings escaped and went to a pub in the village of Ruinerwold to ask for help.

Bar owner Chris Westerbeek said he saw the man came in and he was untidy and confused.

“He ordered five beers and drank them. Then I had a chat with him and he revealed he had run away and needed help… Then we called the police,” Westerbeek told the reporters.

“He said he had brothers and sisters who lived at the farm. He said he was the oldest and wanted to end the way they were living,” he added.

Mayor Roger de Groot told the local news that he has never seen anything like it.

The 58-year-old man is not at all the father of the siblings nor was he the owner of the farmhouse. Right now, the siblings are in “a safe place,” the mayor continued.

It is also believed that their mother had already passed away, according to the mayor.

The authorities did not release the names of the siblings and it is still unclear how they are related to the older man who was later arrested for not cooperating in the investigation.

The siblings never had any contact with the outside world, according to Dutch media. They were living with what was available on the farm and they even had no idea that there were other people outside. They were not registered and the neighbors thought only the older man was living on the farm.

Law enforcement who responded to the reports found the hidden staircase to where the siblings were kept.

There are still a lot of questions clouding the situation and investigation is still ongoing.
