WHAT’S BEING CLAIMED:
- Dion Greene and his 57-year-old father were just about to get home from a fun night when the Dayton, Ohio mass shooter started firing his assault rifle at the area where they were standing.
- Sadly, Dion’s father, Derrick Fudge died. He was the oldest person who was killed in the shooting where eight others died.
- Although still dazed from the events, Greene told news outlet WLWT that he believed his father must have taken the bullet for him and saved his life.
Dion Greene and his father, Derrick Fudge, were at Ned Peppers Bar in Dayton, Ohio when a gunman started shooting near the establishment that left nine people dead and injuring dozens more.
Green lived, but his 57-year-old father did not.
“I don’t know how it wasn’t me,” says Greed who told Cincinnati’s WLWT that he can’t sleep because he kept on seeing his father’s eyes whenever he closes his.
Green told reporters that his father may have saved his life.
“He must have taken it for me. I just don’t understand. I’m so lost in the situation myself,” Green told the Springfield News-Sun.
Green told WLWT said that he was on a fun date with his girlfriend and father that fateful evening. They were standing outside the bar about to go home when the shooter walked past them then started firing his .223-caliber assault rifle. Soon after, Greene found himself holding his father and saying his goodbyes.
“As I get closer I start to see blood in the back of his head. I just lost it, it’s just like, ‘Dad, I love you.’ I just wrapped around his body and just lied on him,” said Green.
Greene said he feels so much pain and regret for what happened that night.
“I’m going through pains people don’t go through in two lifetimes. I replay that night, and I’m just like, man, I could’ve just stopped him,” Green told the news station.
Fudge was the oldest victim in the shooting. The others were: were Lois Oglesby, 27; Saeed Saleh, 38; Logan Turner, 30; Nicholas Cumer, 25, Thomas McNichols, 25, Beatrice Warren-Curtis, 36 and Monica Brickhouse, 39; and the shooter’s 22-year-old sister, Megan Betts.
While the motive for the attack hasn’t yet been established, the FBI reported that the perpetrator was obsessed with violence and mass shootings.
