WHAT’S BEING CLAIMED:
- During the memorial for rapper Nipsey Hussle outside his clothing store, a stampede broke out among the crowd that later resulted to two seriously injured persons and 10 others hurt.
- Media reported that people started running when they heard shots being fired; however, a witness said that there was no shooting but bottles being broken in a fight.
- Hussle died on Sunday afternoon due to several gunshot wounds on his body in a shooting incident in Los Angeles.
A stampede during the vigil for Grammy-nominated rapper Nipsey Hussle in Los Angeles on Monday night left at least two people critically injured and 10 others hurt.
Police and media reports said that when the stampede happened, the crowd who were outside Hussles’s Marathon Clothing store seemed to be responding to a supposed shooting nearby. This was further explained by a musician, DeAndre Harvey who told the LA Times that bottles of alcohol breaking in a fight that broke out at the memorial were mistaken by the attendees as shots being fired.
However, those “do not appear accurate” according to the Los Angeles police chief, Michel Moore in a later tweet.
Although complete details of the stampeding incident have yet to be reported by the police department, they told the LA Times that most of the patients’ injuries were related to being trampled.
Hussle, 33, whose real name is Ermias Asghedom, died of multiple gunshot wounds to the head and torso in an attack that constituted “numerous shots”. He was pronounced dead on Sunday afternoon after being rushed to the hospital.
The shooting which occurred outside Hussle’s clothing shop also wounded two others. So far, no motive for the killing was divulged by the police.
LA police said that his death was ruled a homicide. Eric Holder, 29, was named as a suspect in the killing. He was running away from the scene in a white Chevrolet, according to the police.
Fellow musicians like Pharrell Williams and rapper Pusha T have tweeted their tributes to the rapper. Williams’ tweet said that Hussle has inspired millions with his positivity and may his legacy be upheld forever. He added writing, “Rest among the stars.”
Rapper Pusha T also wrote: “He was sharing his purest self, his vision, and traits from his heritage with all of us. White supremacy at its finest couldn’t have done something this terrible.”
While growing up in South Los Angeles, Hussle used to be a street gang member in his teenage years but later became a community organizer.
Victory Lap, his debut studio album was nominated for this year’s Grammy Awards for best rap album.
