A man who appears to be sleeping behind the wheel of a moving Tesla car was spotted in the Bay Area, California.
A motorist filmed the man apparently dozing while on an Autopilot during rush hour.
Tesla stresses that even though the car’s autopilot system has advanced safety features, it is “not a self-driving system.”
Here’s a scene you don’t see everyday — a driver who seems to be sleeping behind the wheel of a moving car.
The Tesla driver is presumed to be driving on autopilot while other motorists honk to get his attention. One motorist was able to record the incident and uploaded the video on Reddit.
Posted to Reddit’s Idiots In Cars section, the footage shows a white Tesla car moving at a steady speed through at least three lanes of traffic, with the driver’s head slumped turned towards the driver’s side window.
MiloWee, the Reddit poster, wrote: “Couldn’t believe it … asleep in heavy Friday rush hour traffic in the Bay Area,” on the video that was viewed over 52,000 times.
MiloWee claimed that other motorists repeatedly honked to try to wake him up. “It worked, but he fell back asleep,” he wrote in the comments.
According to Tesla, while the car’s autopilot system has advanced safety features, it is “not a self-driving system.”
“Autopilot is intended for use with a fully attentive driver, who has their hands on the wheel and is prepared to take over at any time,” Tesla writes on its website.
“While using Autopilot, it is your responsibility to stay alert, keep your hands on the steering wheel at all times and maintain control of your car.”
Meanwhile, most Reddit users thought the driver was just pulling a stunt to show off Tesla’s advanced features.
“Doesn’t matter if it’s a prank, he’s still an idiot for doing that in heavy traffic,” Reddit user, kitpinch, commented.
