If you’ve ever wondered what happens when artificial intelligence goes rogue and dreams up a pizza commercial, wonder no more.
Redditor u/PizzaLater has created an AI-generated advertisement for an imaginary pizza place called “Pepperoni Hug Spot,” and the results are equal parts hilarious and nightmare-inducing.
The 30-second video, which has gone viral on YouTube, Twitter, and TikTok, features a bizarre voiceover inviting viewers to “bring friends down to Pepperoni Hug Spot,” accompanied by a retro backing track.
The visuals, however, are where the true nightmare fuel lies.
“Customers” chow down on pizza, and a “chef” preps a pie in a way that’s deeply unsettling.
The AI-generated imagery propels viewers headfirst into the uncanny valley, with almost-real-but-not-quite people and pizza.
The voiceover proudly lists toppings like “cheese, pepperoni, vegetable, and more secret things,” while displaying images that prompt the question, “What exactly are these ‘secret things’???”
The internet’s response to the ad has been a mix of horror, amusement, and confusion.
Tweets range from “This AI generated pizza commercial is terrifying and hilarious” to “Dude this is so cursed I can’t handle it.”
Even Pizza Hut chimed in with, “My heebies have been jeebied,” while Elon Musk responded with an exploding head emoji.
Creator “Pizza Later” didn’t have realism in mind for this project. He explained to TODAY.com, “Text-to-video technology is still in its infancy, so the quality of the clips remains quite rough. However, it was perfect for this spoof commercial.”
The idea emerged from a slow workday and a desire to create a laugh-worthy ad using AI technologies.
Using tools like Runway Gen2, Chat GPT4, Eleven Labs, Midjourney, and Soundraw AI, Pizza Later crafted the music, voiceover, graphics, video, and even the script for the ad. He then assembled the elements in Adobe After Effects to create the final, bizarre product.
The overwhelming response to the video led Pizza Later to create a website echoing the ad’s uncanny atmosphere, as well as merchandise like hats and T-shirts.
He joked, “I figured I should capitalize on my 15 minutes of internet fame, right?”
This nightmarish pizza commercial is just the beginning for Pizza Later, who plans to produce more AI-generated content for his YouTube channel. He’ll also reveal how he made the Pepperoni Hug Spot ad, demonstrating the power of AI in the creative process.
For now, we’re left laughing, bewildered, and slightly scared of what other nightmarish creations AI might unleash upon the world.
