WHAT’S BEING CLAIMED:
- Amid the risk of contracting coronavirus, residents of Wuhan city in China, the pandemic’s original ground zero, overcrowded the Maya Beach Water Park last weekend as seen on photos and videos shared online.
- Scientists believed that the novel coronavirus came from bats and was then transmitted to humans.
- The official tally said that around 3,000 people died in Wuhan due to COVID-19, but some residents claimed that the death toll reached over 42,000.
Dozens of photos went viral online over a jam-packed crowd in Wuhan, China, in what seemed to be a huge swimming pool celebration.
Hundreds of people flocked the Wuhan Maya Beach Water Park over the weekend, not minding the risk of contracting COVID-19 at the place where the pandemic began. People flooded the massive pool amid the summer heat as they watch a performance.
The disturbing scenery was a total opposite compared to the lockdown restrictions that were imposed on January 23 at the central Hubei province city.
The novel coronavirus outbreak has put Wuhan’s 11 million population in solitary. The whole city’s public transport ━ buses, railways, flights, and ferry services ━ were halted. Going outdoors was also prohibited.
On April 8, the city’s lockdown was lifted as the pandemic already struck the US and Europe.
Based on the city’s official tally, over 3,000 died due to COVID-19. However, Wuhan residents believed that the death toll had reached around 42,000 as others provided higher figures as they referred to the number of cremation urns that were sent to funeral homes.
According to scientists, the novel coronavirus was first seen in bats. Then it spread to the residents in Wuhan, as the city’s wet markets offer exotic types of animal dishes.
There were also conspiracy theories that suggest the virus may have originated from the Wuhan Institute of Virology laboratory.
China claims that the total casualties from the coronavirus were at 84,849, where 4,634 had passed away. Though some have been skeptical about the numbers given the government’s authoritarian rule.
To date, the coronavirus has taken away 770,000 lives across the globe. Western countries especially in the US region have witnessed another round of COVID-19 outbreak.
