A former TikTok senior employee said that managers forced employees to work 12-hour days six days a week.
Pabel Martinez, who made $220,000 per year at the enormously popular video-sharing app, alleged that TikTok supervisors would routinely urge employees to attend meetings on weekends in addition to working beyond office hours.
Martinez, who formerly worked for Facebook’s parent company, Meta, said he left early this year after joining the Chinese-owned firm in February.
He told Insider: “I do think that the culture of working too much or not having as much of the work-life balance does permeate throughout the organization, and it is often encouraged you work ‘after hours’. “The 996 policy’s infamous.”
The numbers “996” refer to Chinese business practices, where employees are expected to report to work from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. six days a week.
According to a source at TikTok, the company does not have a “996” culture.
ByteDance, TikTok’s parent firm, reduced working hours late last year, informing staff that they would be expected to arrive at 10 a.m. and will end at 7:00 p.m. The workweek would be Monday through Friday.
Despite this, employees said that due to the time difference between the company’s US-based operations and its headquarters in Beijing, they were still obliged to check in to meetings at ungodly hours.
When Martinez objected to having to attend meetings on the weekends, he was told, “That’s not how we do business here.”
He also claimed to have been reprimanded for publicly disclosing his $220,000 annual salary on LinkedIn as part of “Latina Equal Pay Day.”
Martinez stated that he felt pressured by strict, bi-monthly revenue and growth targets, as well as 360-degree performance assessments.
He told Insider: “I was made to feel like I was never doing enough,. At TikTok, no conversation started with ‘How are you?’ It was like, ‘How’s the revenue? What are we doing to drive more growth?’”
TikTok did not immediately answer The Post’s request for comment.
Through employee surveys, TikTok said it hoped to foster a “culture of transparency and feedback.” The firm also stated that as a multinational firm, it was required to coordinate meetings across multiple time zones.
According to a TikTok spokesperson, the company’s goal is on establishing and fostering a team that is empowered to support its growing global audience.

Kobelev assured intrigued (and perhaps horrified) customers that the breast milk would be safely sourced, with all mothers tested for health assurance.
In the early stages, only about 40-45 breast milk-infused drinks were planned to be served.
However, they aimed to foam up the production to around 1,000 beverages by year’s end.
A drink would set you back 650 rubles, or about $8.
Once the video went viral, social media blew up like a well-steamed milk frother.
Many wondered if it was a hoax, or if Russia’s food safety authority, the Rospotrebnadzor, was going to get involved.
A local deputy even conducted a poll asking if people were game to try these unique coffee drinks.
The results were frothy: 46% said ‘never,’ while 23% admitted they were ready to give it a try.
Just as things were beginning to boil over, Kobelev revealed the truth behind the entire spectacle.
There would be no breast milk lattes.
It was, in fact, a gimmick; a marketing ploy whipped up when a breastfeeding mother appeared at a company meeting.
“We did not prepare or sell coffee with breast milk,” Kobelev clarified in a press release, likely easing a few jittery nerves.
He added that using breast milk for coffee production was illegal, a handy fact he probably should’ve brewed on earlier.
