WHAT’S BEING CLAIMED:
- There is a trending ridiculous internet challenge that’s been popular among teens nowadays—snorting condoms.
- The idea is to attempt snorting the barrier contraceptive up your nose and pull it out through your mouth.
- The challenge can give you instant fame when your posted video is viewed by thousands, however, the stupid act comes with some risks.
The condom snorting challenge is not really new. In fact, it has been around for a number of years. Some “Condom Challenge” videos were even uploaded more than 10 years ago.
The challenge has gotten more attention when YouTuber “Savannah Strong” uploaded a video of herself, posted on April 8, 2013, doing the challenge to the tune of Taylor Swift’s “22.”
Aside from the challenge being gross, the fact that a condom is made of latex rubber and covered in lubricant and spermicide, it can do some damage to your nose.
Only medications like nasal sprays are recommended, by a doctor, of course, to go up your nose. Anything else can irritate the sensitive inner lining of your nose. It may cause an allergic reaction or an infection.
A condom, which is designed not to tear, is obviously bigger than your nostril. The rubber could choke you if it gets stuck in your nose or your throat.
In 2004, the Indian Journal of Chest Diseases and Allied Sciences published a report, the “Accidental condom inhalation”, detailing the suffering of a 27-year-old woman who performed oral sex on a man wearing a condom. The woman accidentally swallowed the rubber and went directly into her lungs. It blocked one of her airways, causing pneumonia and a collapse of the right upper lobe of her lung.
The Journal of Medical Case Reports also published a report involving a 26-year old woman who accidentally swallowed a condom while performing oral sex. The incident caused her to develop appendicitis because a fragment of the latex rubber lodged inside her appendix.
Accidentally swallowing a condom does not always result tragically because the rubber may just pass through. But, deliberately inhaling or swallowing a condom is generally not recommended.
A lot of people are thinking if it’s really worth doing the condom snorting challenge just to get more likes and views on social media. Obviously, some teens like the attention.
