WHAT’S BEING CLAIMED:
- President Donald Trump has earned criticisms about how he handled the inspections he made in North Carolina on the aftermath of Hurricane Florence.
- During the visit, Trump was drawn by a yacht washed ashore by the flood and into a resident’s backyard.
- Instead of consoling the homeowner, he congratulated him for “getting a nice boat out of the deal.”
As Hurricane Florence’s mortality rate grew to at least 37, President Donald Trump visited North Carolina last Wednesday to assess the damage.
While observing the aftermath of the hurricane in the low-lying neighborhood of New Bern, North Carolina, Trump came across a yacht that had washed ashore into a resident’s backyard.
Trump asked the homeowner “Is this your boat? Or . . . did it become your boat?’ The man replied that it was not his boat. Subsequently, Trump said with a smile, “At least you got a nice boat out of the deal.”
Trump persistently inquire regarding the boat, asking a group of reporters, locals and handlers, “That boat is wiped out, or not?” and jokingly said, “Wouldn’t want to cross the ocean in it.”
Hurricane Florence hit the Carolinas last Friday, displacing thousands of residents and taking at least 37 lives. Over 350 people from New Bern had to be saved as storm waters flooded the community.
Later on Wednesday, a reporter solicited Trumps thought on what he had observed in New Bern.
“I think it’s incredible, I think it’s incredible. To see what we’re seeing — this boat, I don’t know what happened, but this boat just came here. And do you know whose boat that is?” Trump said, according to pool reports.
“No one knows who owned the boat. What’s the law? Maybe it becomes theirs,” he added referring to the man he’d met earlier.
With these insensitive remarks, the President is now dealing with social media bashing, which some have called compassionless.
This isn’t the only time Trump has been criticized for tactless response to a natural disaster.
After Hurricane Maria wrecked Puerto Rico, President Trump unethically came embattled for tossing paper towel rolls to a group of survivors. Just now, Trump has encountered backfire regarding his repeated denials about the recognized death toll from Maria.

I think he was very compassionate and consoling and even tried to interject a little humor into a sad situation. But you know the old sayin: if Trump walked on water, the left would say he couldn’t swim. Sad!
SO TRUE!!!!
So now it’s a crime to have a sense of humor? I know others who said much worse but because their name isn’t Trump nothing is said. Typical left, “I can say it but if you do we’ll crucify you.”
That’s why the media is so hated!! They turn everything around against Trump.
If Obama had said that he would have been praised for being clever, and personable, and as far as the tossing of the paper towels goes, he was getting them to the ones who were way in back of the room. I saw it, and everyone was grabbing them and laughing. Will this man ever get credit for the improvements he had made to our country, or will he finish out his (terms) being ridiculed and excoriated? Give him a break, he is our lawfully elected President.
YES! According to media he can do nothing right!!!!!
First of all, Pat, President Obama would have NEVER said or done anything that stupid. Haven’t you heard him speak to people? Love him or not, President Obama is a very compassionate man. Don’t let hatred blind your eyes to the truth!
Why not give this a REST? It’s just another example of President Trump’s awkward statements, made here and there. I see this as his way of trying to add a light moment to a cruel situation of disaster. People need to get off their knees, hiding out there in the bullrushes trying to nitpick everything this man does.
Perhaps they should recall and comment on his unprecedented work to improve our economy, and put people back to work at good wages. And he’s working on strengthening our Military to levels that enemies of the USA will see as formidable. He’s constructing a wall to keep unworthy aliens from coming to America to gravy-train from all of us. He alone has put into action programs to benefit and celebrate our Veterans. He continues to form a tax plan that is more fair than any shoved down our throats during the 20th & 2st centuries.
Ask the people in West Virginia what he has done for them — so far ….
Thank you.
Some people interpret light hearted remarks as being insensitive. This type of person always looks for a way to negatively interpret humor, or one’s attempt, there of, to lighten up the severity of a crisis. Humor in the time of stress is healthy!
how come the rest of the world under stands a joke in light of a bad situation except the media.
Just small talk in regular folks , but is this really a big deal or crass ? NO, but maybe the owner will take the loss, and help the other man fix up the old boat for him to keep. I found lots of furniture, wood etc., and no one ever wanted it back, and I used those materials. We get flood where I live too. Let it go .
That would be something I would say. It’s a joke….. you stupid people always trying to make a big deal out of nothing !
The media always finds a way to make Trump the BAD GUY. Media is soooo negative toward Trump..ALWAYS
