President Donald Trump on Saturday night hosted a movie screening of ‘Joker’ at the White House for his family, friends and staff, according to CNN’s Shimon Prokupecz.
“Joker,” which starred Joaquin Phoenix, tells the origin story of Batman’s sociopathic arch-nemesis.
Released in theaters last month, the movie already passed the $1 billion mark at the box office. Critics previously raised concerns about the movie’s violence and depiction of a man who became a criminal after years of neglect. During its screenings, some theaters even banned face masks and costumes amid security concerns.
“Joker” stars Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck, a disturbed young comedian who later on embraced the world of crime. Though controversial, the movie won the Golden Lion at the Venice International Film Festival after it premiered there in August.
A senior White House official confirmed that the president liked the movie.
A longtime movie fan, Trump regularly screened movies on his private plane during his career as a real estate mogul and reality television star. One of his favorite movies is reportedly the 1988 martial arts classic “Bloodsport” which starred Jean Claude Van Damme.
Trump listed some of his favorite movies in a 2013 tweet, including “‘Citizen Kane,’ ‘Gone With The Wind,’ ‘The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly,’ etc.”
The president has appeared in cameos on the silver screen, playing himself, in movies including “Home Alone 2: Lost In New York,” “Two Weeks Notice,” and the 1989 Bo Derek romantic comedy “Ghosts Can’t Do It.”
He also has a personal connection to the “Batman” movies like the 2012 movie the “Dark Knight Rises,” which included scenes filmed at Trump’s Manhattan headquarters, Trump Tower.
Trump hinted in a tweet that year that shooting at his properties could contribute to a movie’s success at the box office.
“Amazing — both ‘Transformers’ and ‘Dark Knight Rises’ featured Trump properties and each grossed over $1B. Just coincidence,” Trump tweeted in 2012.
