- Valerie Abeling, the aunt of Erin Vertuccie and Shane McGowan, one of the couples who died in a tragic limousine crash in upstate New York, told the media that her daughter received a message from the couple 20 minutes before the fatal crash.
- The message read that the 2001 Ford Excursion limousine “appeared in terrible condition.”
- Among the fatalities were four sisters and their husbands, nine other limo passengers and the driver, and two bystanders.
What was meant to be a replacement vehicle for a group’s rented bus became the main culprit for the demise of 20 people on Saturday.
Valerie Abeling, the aunt of the newlyweds Erin Vertuccie and Shane McGowan, told the Washington Post that her daughter received a text message from the couple 20 minutes before the deadly incident. The message read that the 2001 Ford Excursion limousine “appeared in terrible condition.”
Abeling also reported that her daughter mentioned that the group was originally slated for “some kind of bus” yet broke down before arriving in Cooperstown, NY and thus, had to be provided with a replacement vehicle.
The newlyweds, together with 18 others (including two bystanders) died after the limousine crashed into a parked Toyota Highlander near the Apple Barrel Country Store.
Among the fatalities were four sisters and their husbands, nine other limo passengers and the driver, and two bystanders.
Jessica Kirby, managing director for the cafe, said the crash site has seen “more accidents than [she] can count” and that they “have been asking for something to be done for years.”
There were attempts to make the intersection safer years before yet these improvements did not seem to work. Talking to the New York Times, Schoharie Town Supervisor Alan Tavenner said, “I honestly think that it was a more dangerous intersection than it was before.”
National Transportation Safety Board go-team is also in the area conducting an investigation as to the cause of the said crash. Robert Sumwalt of NSTB said that this incident was the deadliest transportation-related accident in the US since 2009.
As to the fatalities, pending next of kin notification, the names of the victims had not been released yet by the authorities as per the report of the Times Union.
“It’s a tragic loss of beautiful souls,” Abeling told the Post.
