WHAT’S BEING CLAIMED:
- Paulina, a Mexican woman, underwent a procedure to remove her belly button to get back at her family.
- Paulina gifted her belly button to her now ex-boyfriend, Daniel Ramirez, as a “token of love.”
- Her relationship with her family is now much better, and Paulina says that she wishes she could go back in time and not go through with the surgery which caused a lot of heartaches.
Out of anger, we can sometimes do some pretty radical things that we might regret later on. Paulina Casillas Landeros, a 23-year-old Mexican woman from Guadalajara underwent a risky operation to remove her belly button to spite her family.
They didn’t agree with Paulina’s choice to get different body modifications including tattoos, a back corset, and a split tongue.
She found body modifications fascinating and feels that “there is something very transcending about them.” That was three years ago when her relationship with her family was rocky. “I was very angry, I wanted to cut all unions from everything and everyone.”
For Paulina, having the surgery to remove her belly button seemed like a controversial and symbolic way to “dehumanize” herself. She gave her belly button to her then-boyfriend in 2015, Daniel Ramirez, who Paulina described as being one of the most supportive and influential people in her life. They’re not together now, but Paulina says that they’re still good friends. Daniel still has the belly button.
Though the procedure was done by a professional, Paulina says he gave her bad post-op advice. The trauma ended up infected and she suffered from pain when she tried to stretch or even laugh.
“It gradually healed itself but not 100%- it will never close entirely.”
Paulina now regrets having pushed through with the operation, saying it was reckless and impulsive.
“If I could go back in time, I wouldn’t do it again,” Pailina said.
She regrets having hurt numerous people, especially her mother when Paulina wanted to break all ties with them. The whole ordeal serves as a reminder for the woman to think things through before acting.
Aside from that, she says, “It’s a nice reminder that characterizes me.” Paulina’s relationship with her family has since improved.
