London officials reported the death of professional wrestler Silver King, who collapsed in the ring during Saturday’s Lucha Libre show at the Roundhouse.
Roundhouse organizers expressed their condolences on Twitter, saying, “Last night Silver King sadly lost his life during an event at the Roundhouse. At this stage the details are still being investigated so we don’t have more information we can share. Our thoughts and condolences are with his family, friends and all of the Lucha Libre team.”
The 51-year-old wrestler, whose real name is César Cuauhtémoc González Barrón, played the villainous character Ramses in the 2006 comedy Nacho Libre alongside Hollywood star Jack Black. He was set to reprise the role on Saturday’s show.
According to the Camden New Journal, Silver King collapsed in the ring after a kick to the side of his body, but his co-performers did not immediately realize there was a problem.
Fans started chanting “Silver, Silver,” after Barrón collapsed, until organizers announced a break in the show and cleared out the venue.
An audience member recounted, “It seemed to be part of the show at first, but then he didn’t get up – and then the medical team was on the stage. Everybody was cleared out and lots of police and ambulances were there.”
Sky News reported that paramedics arrived five minutes after being called at 10:21 p.m., but Barrón was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to Sky News, Silver King joined World Championship Wrestling (WCW) in 1997 and became a show regular on its WCW Monday Nitro. His highest profile match was at the 1998 Fall Brawl, where he challenged Guerrera for the WCW Cruiserweight Championship.
His stint at the WCW ended in late 2000.
Members and fans of the wrestling world have since paid tribute across social media.
A statement from WWE expressed the group’s condolences: “A champion luchador in his native Mexico, Silver King, real name César Cuauhtémoc González Barrón, entertained audiences across the globe, and was a standout in WCW’s Cruiserweight division in the late ‘90s. Outside the ring, he appeared under a mask as the villainous Ramses in the popular 2006 comedy ‘Nacho Libre.’ WWE extends its deepest condolences to Silver King’s family, friends and fans.”
On Instagram, Jack Black shared a photograph taken during the filming of their 2006 movie, captioned “Vaya con dios, hermano [go with god, brother]”.
