WHAT’S BEING CLAIMED:
- Adele posted a picture online in celebration of her birthday, putting into public view her new body image.
- The singer has become a target for being plus-sized throughout her career.
- The discourse around the weight loss of the singer continues to grow.
Adele reappears after months of staying out of the public eye, looking that she had lost much weight. The public had targeted the singer for being plus-sized back in 2008, the year she debuted her “19” album.
“I’ve never wanted to look like models on the cover of magazines,” she said. “I represent the majority of women and I’m very proud of that.”
Adele discussed body image with Anderson Cooper about the same time the issue had come up.
“I’ve never seen magazine covers and seen music videos and been like, I want to look like that if I want to be a success,” she said.
Adele posted a photo in celebration of her birthday, thanking people for the birthday wishes sent her way, but what took focus was her weight loss. This became another discourse about the body image of the singer, with people framing it in a way that this weight loss is the most incredible thing the singer had been able to achieve.
The recent photos posted on her social media restarts an online debate on her weight loss that had started in January. This is about the time TMZ published one article headlined “ADELE NOW FANS SAY SHE’S GETTING TOO THIN …Can’t Please Everybody.”
These commentaries directed at the singer and her weight loss became apparent after her photos on the beach in Anguilla were posted online.
These celebrities draw both appraisals and judgment from everyone. People feel entitled to comment about them because they buy their music records, or watch their movies. Their popularity makes them targets because the public thinks they know them. This makes it easier to share opinions about them.
This does not, however, warrant anybody to force the singer to adhere to their personal standards of beauty. Adele is her own person, and her body is hers alone. How the singer would prefer to dress herself is also her own business and is neither a reflection of her artistry, nor her professional accomplishments in the music industry.
The singer topped billboard charts four times and won herself an Oscar and 15 Grammys. This is on top of multiple world records and countless stadiums that had sold out. Her body made no impact as to how she achieved these accomplishments.
Adele had trimmed down. No matter the change in her body image, this does not change the fact that the singer is a beautiful woman with outstanding artistry.
“There’s bigger issues going on in the world than how I feel about myself and stuff like that,” she said when asked about her body back in 2015.
