Mayor Bruce Wilkerson of Bowling Green, Kentucky discovered a woman hiding inside his cellar last week, the Bowling Green Daily News reported.
From Tuesday through Wednesday, Mayor Wilkerson busied himself on one of his projects renovating a house. The morning on the second day, he says he “heard a ruckus” outside the house that he tried to ignore at first, but when the noise did not stop, the mayor went on a search for clues to figure out what is causing it.
The search directed him over to small blood stains on the cellar door of the home, but there is nothing out of the ordinary inside the cellar aside from a plastic bag loaded with women’s clothing. The mayor reported the incident to the police, requesting missing person reports.
The police department reported back that there are no open missing person cases. The mayor decided to continue with his renovation project only to discover later that day that some of the electrical switches in the house had lost power.
This prompted another investigation around the house and the cellar. This time, the door to the cellar was ajar and a frightened woman was found inside.
“She said, ‘I’m hiding from someone,’” Mayor Wilkerson told the newspaper. The woman was about 20 years old, but apart from this, he failed to get more information about the woman because she ran out of the cellar and down the street.
The woman remains unidentified. Mayor Wilkerson wanted to come forward to the press about his involvement with the incident in his cellar.
“I told the officers when they came that she didn’t steal anything. I asked the officers why they were grinning and they said that no matter how they write the report, it’s going to say the mayor locked a woman in his house,” the mayor said.
