WHAT’S BEING CLAIMED:
- A baby in Brazil was born with two penises.
- The two penises vary in size and the doctors decided to remove the bigger one.
- The choice was taken based on “functionality rather than size.”
One of a boy’s two penises had to be removed, but surgeons chose to remove the larger one. The Brazilian kid is one of one million baby boys born with a double penis.
According to doctors in Sao Paulo, only 100 men with the condition known as diphallia have been reported in medical literature to date. They publish their own case report of a kid with two penises that lay side by side in the Journal of Pediatric Urology.
In contrast to having simply an “accessory” penis or stump, he had “complete” diphallia.
The unidentified boy was two years old when he underwent surgery.
After noticing that the left penis was larger, the physicians decided to keep it while removing the lesser right member. Despite their differences in size, they appeared to be in good condition. Both penises, according to the mother, had the potential to get erect.
Examinations, however, found that each penis only had one of two corpora cavernosa, or spongy columns of tissues that fill with blood and erect the penis.
The boy’s mother confirmed that he could only urinate from the smaller penis. According to MailOnline, the larger one’s urethra was too tiny to allow pee to pass through.
As a result, a choice was taken based on “functionality rather than size,” which meant that the larger penis had to be removed.
Surgeons completely amputated the left penis and filmed the procedure for publication in an online journal. The Brazilian team was able to chop the left penis off and stitch the remaining flesh together nicely.
Given that he only has one erection chamber in his surviving penis, it’s unclear how the boy will be capable of having erections in the future.
There’s no reason why men with double penises can’t have a regular sex life and have children, according to MedicalNewsToday. However, there is a larger chance of kidney and colorectal system failure, which can lead to infection and ultimately death. As a result, it is deemed necessary to remove one of the penises and treat any internal abnormalities.
