WHAT’S BEING CLAIMED:
- A teenager’s estranged father unloaded a trailer full of pennies onto his ex-wife’s front lawn for his final child support payment.
- 18-year-old Avery Sanford says she hadn’t seen her father in years.
- The mother and daughter pair donated the $800 to the domestic abuse charity Safe Harbor.
Virginia teenager Avery Sanford saw her estranged father for the first time in years when he utilized a unique method to deliver his final child support payment—unloading a trailer full of 80,000 pennies onto his ex-wife’s front lawn.
“I just turned 18. When I was in the middle of class, my dad came by. He had rented a trailer,” Avery Sanford said.
Sanford said her dad “pulled up in front of the house and turned the trailer on so it dumped out all the pennies on the grass.”
“And my mom came out and was like, ‘What are you dumping in my yard?’ She didn’t know who it was until he shouted, ‘It’s your final child support payment,” the teen recalled.
Avery, along with her mom and sister, collected all 80,000 pennies from their yard and plan to donate the entire sum to Safe Harbor, non-profit organization that supports those impacted by domestic violence.
“It’s not just my mom he’s trying to embarrass, it’s also me and my sister and it’s upsetting that he didn’t consider that before he did that,” Sanford said.
“Turning around and donating that money to moms and children in need, I feel like that really turns this situation into a positive. You can learn from it.”
Sanford’s father told a local media outlet that his actions resulted from 18 years of pent-up frustration, and the last thing he wanted to do was further drive a wedge between him and his daughter.
