WHAT’S BEING CLAIMED:
- Atlanta Hawks will launch an investigation about the verbal dispute between Los Angeles Lakers’ Lebron James and a group of fans on Monday’s game.
- The fans, composed of four people, faced ejection as Lebron described the yelling woman as “Courtside Karen.”
- Despite the altercation, James said he was happy that fans are already allowed to watch the games.
The Athletic reported that Atlanta Hawks will probe the altercation between Los Angeles Lakers star Lebron James and a group of fans during Monday’s game. About four viewers were escorted out of the arena following their verbal brawl with the NBA superstar.
The scene happened in the fourth quarter as the Lakers sealed their win against the Hawks (107-99). Referees paused the game following the yelling from the crowd. A woman was seen yelling at James together with three other fans.
After the game, the Lakers star made fun of the incident, tweeting “Courtside Karen was MAD MAD!!”
Juliana Carlos, the fan who yelled out to James during the game, quickly took her ranting and side of the story to Instagram.
Per Carlos, James went out to them and cursed her together with her husband. Based on the footage reviewed by the Athletic, the only heard words that James uttered was “Ol’ steriod ass,” as he called out Carlos’ husband.
James seemed to have not made a big deal out of the verbal scuffle as he remained composed during his post-game interview.
“At the end of the day, I’m happy fans are back in the building,” he told reporters.
“I missed that interaction, I need that interaction, we as players need that interaction. I don’t feel like it was warranted to be kicked out. There was a back-and-forth between two grown men. We said our piece, he said his piece, I said my piece, and then someone else jumped into it and said their piece. I didn’t think they should’ve been kicked out, but they might’ve had a couple of drinks, maybe, and they could’ve probably kept it going and the game wouldn’t have been about the game anymore, so the referees did what they had to do.”
Just this week, Monday’s ejection became the second time a fan was expelled from the court for heckling James. During the Lakers’ game versus the Cleveland Cavaliers last January 25, a fan was also ejected after heckling James.
