WHAT’S BEING CLAIMED:
- Shouting “we hope they die,” protesters gathered at a Los Angeles hospital treating two severely injured deputies after getting ambushed.
- Two demonstrators were arrested as the authorities called the rally an “unlawful assembly.”
- According to Sheriff Alex Villanueva, the two rookie officers were “ambushed by a gunman in a cowardly fashion.”
According to officials, anti-police rallyists flocked to a Los Angeles hospital where two police officers were confined after getting ambushed and sustained gunshots. Protesters chanted “we hope they die.”
The two rookie cops, one male and one female, were trying to survive as they got “critically injured” in an ambush while they sat in their patrol car in Compton.
“To the protesters blocking the entrance & exit of the HOSPITAL EMERGENCY ROOM yelling ‘We hope they die’ referring to 2 LA Sheriff’s ambushed today in #Compton: DO NOT BLOCK EMERGENCY ENTRIES & EXITS TO THE HOSPITAL,” Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department tweeted early Sunday.
“People’s lives are at stake when ambulances can’t get through,” they added.
The department said that officials tagged the protest as an unlawful assembly. Two people were arrested upon refusal to move out of the vicinity. An unknown reporter who “ran towards the deputies, ignored repeated commands to stay back” and “interfered with the arrest” was also apprehended.
The reporter’s name was later identified as Josie Huang of LAist, to which the outlet confirmed her affiliation. Huang was released from police custody on early Sunday. She said that she would later address the sheriff’s office claims.
During a news conference, Sheriff Alex Villanueva said that the cops were “ambushed by a gunman in a cowardly fashion,” adding that the incident was a “somber reminder that this is a dangerous job.”
“Every week across the nation someone is losing their life in the line of duty,” he said. “This is just another grim reminder of that.”
Assemblyman Reggie Jones-Sawyer also spoke during the news conference, saying “This was an unprovoked, cowardly act…The individual will be caught, and justice will prevail.”
According to the Los Angeles Times, the ambushed officers were not named. The only information that was revealed was they are neophyte cops with just over a year of service. One is a 24-year-old male and the other one was a 31-year-old female, a mother of a six-year-old boy.
