WHAT’S BEING CLAIMED:
- Jada Pinkett Smith confirmed that she had a relationship with R&B singer August Alsina, but that it occurred while she was privately separated from husband Will Smith.
- In a new episode of “Red Table Talk,” the Smiths both denied that Smith gave Alsina his blessing to enter the relationship.
- However, Pinkett Smith clarified that they were amicably separated at that time, which could be why August might “perceive it as permission.”
Jada Pinkett Smith and her husband, Will Smith, discussed their relationship and the recent rumors involving R&B singer August Alsina in a new episode of “Red Table Talk.”
Rumors circulated about Pinkett Smith’s affair with Alsina after the singer revealed their relationship in an interview with radio host Angela Yee. Alsina also claimed that Smith had sanctioned the affair.
Pinkett Smith then promised to shed light on the rumors and tweeted on July 2, “There’s some healing that needs to happen… so I’m bringing myself to The Red Table.”
Pinkett Smith’s representatives had previously denied Alsina’s claims.
But Pinkett Smith confirmed the relationship herself in the “Red Table Talk” episode. She added that it occurred four and a half years ago, while she and Smith were separated.
Pinkett Smith recalled, “We were over. From there, as time went on, I got into a different kind of entanglement with August.”
The two both denied, however, that Smith gave Alsina his blessing to enter the relationship.
Pinkett Smith told her husband, “One of the things I want to clear up that was kind of swirling in the press was you giving permission, which the only person who can give permission in that particular circumstance is myself.”
“Yes. Exactly,” Smith agreed.
Pinkett Smith then offered an explanation as to why August might “perceive it as permission” — it was because she and Smith were indeed “separated amicably.”
“I think he also wanted to make it clear that he’s not a homewrecker, which he’s not,” she continued.
She shared that she started her relationship with Alsina to try to be happy and help heal him. Eventually, she realized that the happiness she was searching for needed to come from within herself.
She then ended her relationship with Alsina and got back together with Smith.
“I would definitely say that we tried everything we could to get away from each other, only to realize that that wasn’t possible,” Pinkett Smith remarked.
She noted that she and Alsina have not spoken since their relationship ended.
Jada Pinkett Smith and Will Smith have been married since 1997. They have two children together, Jaden and Willow.
