WHAT’S BEING CLAIMED:
- Kanye West has issued a public apology on Twitter to his wife, Kim Kardashian West, for his behavior in recent weeks.
- West had previously posted a series of rants claiming that his wife was trying to have him locked up for medical reasons.
- Kardashian West, meanwhile, asked the public to treat her husband, who is struggling with bipolar disorder, with compassion and understanding.
Kanye West has publicly apologized to his wife, Kim Kardashian West, for his outbursts and behavior in recent weeks.
West tweeted on Saturday: “I would like to apologize to my wife Kim for going public with something that was a private matter. I did not cover her like she has covered me. To Kim I want to say I know I hurt you. Please forgive me. Thank you for always being there for me.”
The rapper had posted a series of rambling tweets late last Monday, claiming that his wife of six years was trying to have him locked up for medical reasons. He then compared the situation to Nelson Mandela’s imprisonment and the premise of the horror movie “Get Out.”
West also declared in a since-deleted tweet that he has “been trying to get divorced” since his wife had a meeting with rapper Meek Mill “at the Waldorf for ‘prison reform.'”
Prior to that, West also delivered an emotional rant against abortion during his first presidential campaign rally in Charleston, South Carolina, last Sunday. He began to cry hysterically when he revealed that he and his wife initially considered terminating their first pregnancy.
Kardashian West finally delivered her statement regarding West’s outbursts on Wednesday, July 22. She asked everyone to treat her husband with compassion.
She explained, “(Kanye) is a brilliant but complicated person who on top of the pressures of being an artist and a black man, who experienced the painful loss of his mother, has to deal with the pressure and isolation that is heightened by his bi-polar disorder.”
“Those who are close with Kanye know his heart and understand his words some times do not align with his intentions,” she continued.
Kardashian West stated, “We as a society talk about giving grace to the issue of mental health as a whole, however we should also give it to the individuals who are living with it in times when they need it the most.”
“I kindly ask that the media and public give us the compassion and empathy that is needed so that we can get through this. Thank you for those who have expressed concern for Kanye’s well-being and for your understanding,” she implored.
West had previously discussed his diagnosis and life with bipolar disorder.
During a 2018 interview with Jimmy Kimmel, West said, “There’s some cases of bipolar where people go low, I’m one that goes high.”
Kim and Kanye have been married for six years and are parents to four children: North, 7, Saint, 4, Chicago, 2, and Psalm, 1.
