Teen Pushes Off Bear to Protect Dogs [Video]

  • When a teenager heard her family’s dogs barking outside, she never thought she’d face off against a mama bear.
  • The bear was perched on the brick wall enclosing their yard, and was swiping at one of the dogs.
  • Adrenaline took over the teenager, who pushed the bear off the wall and ran with the dogs back to the safety of their home.

Can you fight a bear? One teenager from Southern California was able to fend off a bear to protect her family’s dogs.

When 17-year-old Hailey Morinico heard the dogs barking outside, she decided to check what the problem was.

“I thought they were just barking at a dog because they always bark at dogs or squirrels or whatever, ’cause they’re dumb,” she recalled. “But I go to tell them to stop, and when I go over there to see what they’re barking at, I’m like, ‘That’s a funny-looking dog.'”

Morinico saw a mama bear and her cubs on top of the brick wall enclosing their yard. The bear was swiping at the dogs, including her mother’s service dog, TJ. Adrenaline took over. She rushed toward the bear, pushed it off the wall, and grabbed one of the little dogs, Wednesday, as the rest of the dogs retreated back inside.

A video of the Memorial Day incident was shared by Morinico’s cousin on TikTok, where it has since been viewed over 44 million times.

Morinico starts the clip by saying, “I’m the person who fought off a bear to protect my kids. To preface this, I live in the mountains, so this is actually really normal. And it’s summer, so they always come now.”

She said that she spotted the bear “literally picking up” one of the small dogs, Valentina. “She is the baby, and as her slave, I have to protect her,” she joked.

“So, I go over to the bear, and I look it in the eyes. And the first thing I think to do is push it,” she continued. “Push an apex predator, man. To be honest, I don’t think I pushed her that hard. I just pushed her enough to make her lose her balance. So, she drops my dog, and I run out of there.”

Morinico was able to get out of the confrontation with only a sprained finger and a “screwed” knee. She assured everyone that all of them are “okay.”
