WHAT’S BEING CLAIMED:
- Twitter declines a request by the president to tag a video which has a “manipulated media” content.
- U.S fact-checker outlets conclude that the Democrat video has been maliciously edited to make it sound like Trump was saying coronavirus is a hoax.
- The president’s campaign accused Twitter of being biased with its policy implementation.
President Donald Trump requested Twitter to label a recent Democrat video in circulation as “manipulated media,” citing the social network’s latest policy about fake news and misinformation spreading.
On Thursday, however, Twitter declined Trump’s request.
The Hill reported that Trump’s camp tagged a new post on Twitter, which has been edited to make it appear that the president is saying coronavirus a “hoax.”
The president’s camp is referring to a video that features audio of Trump saying the word “coronavirus” and spliced with “this is their new hoax.”
Currently, the viral ad has been shared a thousand times with millions of views.
Meanwhile, the same audio was earlier utilized as a campaign advertisement by VP Joe Biden.
The column Fact Checkers of The Washington Post rated the Biden ad with “Four Pinocchios,” which means the video is all lies.
The outlet transcribed Trump’s quote, where the edited audio was reportedly based. Upon review of the whole context of Trump’s speech, The Post determined that the president was referring to the Democrat’s move in politicizing the virus.
The Post further said they never heard Trump saying the coronavirus is a hoax, but rather blasting Democrats and the media’s reporting of his administration’s action toward the pandemic.
Other fact-checking sites such as Politifact, Snopes, and FactCheck.org also had a similar observation.
According to The Hill, the president’s camp reported the content to Twitter on Wednesday, however, on Thursday, the social network found no ground to take down the advertisement since it never went against their manipulated media policy.
Earlier, Twitter also refused to delete a Biden ad, explaining that it was posted on March 3, two days prior to the implementation of its updated media manipulation policy.
Matt Wolking, a spokesperson for Trump’s campaign, said in dismay that their camp is certain Twitter applies two different sets of rules with their group and the Democrats.
Wolking also notes that it is evident Twitter is politically biased toward Joe Biden.
It reported that Twitter tagged a Trump campaign video as manipulated for presenting an excerpt from Biden’s video delivering a speech in Missouri on March 10.
The Trump campaign wrote a letter to Twitter, condemning its action, which seemed to protect Biden, and censors legitimate political speech that does not favor the Democrat candidate.
Twitter announced on Wednesday that it would boost its efforts to remove false information about the coronavirus.
Twitter refused to comment when asked about the issue.
