WHAT’S BEING CLAIMED:
- Erramatti Mangayamma delivered twin girls in Andhra Pradesh state last week at the age of 74.
- Although the patient went through menopause 30 years ago, she was able to conceive via an IVF procedure.
- If her age is proven as claimed, this will make her eight years older than the current record holder of the world’s oldest mother.
Erramatti Mangayamma, 74, from the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, is believed to have become the oldest mother in the world after giving birth to twins.
With her 82-year-old husband, Raja Rao, by her side, Mangayamma gave birth to two healthy baby girls on Thursday morning at the Ahalya IVF clinic under the supervision of Dr. S Umashankar. According to her, she was encouraged to try for a baby via an IVF procedure after a 55-year-old neighbor successfully conceived.
“I cannot express my feeling in words. These babies complete me. My six decade-long wait has finally come to an end. Now, no one call me infertile anymore,” said Mangayamma.
The new mom has no other children and has had her menopause 30 years ago. However, she cannot breastfeed the babies because her body can no longer produce milk.
While her age has yet to be validated, if Mangayamma is as old as she claims, then this will make her eight years older than Maria del Carmen Bousada de Lara, the current world record holder, who gave birth to twin boys in December 2006 at the age of 66 years and 358 days.
Generally, a woman can no longer get pregnant naturally after menopause. But one can through IVF, which uses a mother’s frozen eggs or from a donor.
Recalling her first meeting with Mangayamma last November, Dr. Umashankar said it came as a ‘surprise’ at the same time a ‘challenge’.
A team of doctors then started preparing Mangayamma for the procedure. After her first IVF cycle, the patient conceived in January. Throughout the course of her pregnancy, she stayed in the hospital where doctors can monitor her health. CT scans later revealed that she was having twins.
Knowing the births would be a historic achievement, the hospital trust in Guntur city paid for most of the procedure costs.
Though Indian state of Uttar Pradesh resident Omkari Panwar’s claims of being the world’s oldest mother after giving birth to twins in 2008 at 70 years, her age has not yet been proven. Elizabeth Adeney, from Lindgate in Suffolk is Britain’s oldest mother after giving birth in May 2009 to a son at the age of 66.
Although the IVF procedure is normally offered by the NHS to women below 43, some private clinics offer it to women beyond that age.
